Rethink 100ml Vial Shield Rolling Tray
Operation: Have a 40lb stainless steel wrapped lead filled canister (shield) holding a 100ml vial that is manually shaken (rolled) and then transferred (slid) within a sterile work cell.
Issue: Current rolling tray is showing corrosion at stock roller assemblies and tends to roll too freely & travel wildly during handling.
OCD Solution: (1) Reverse (flip) the “rolling” action from table to shield…instead of the tray rolling inside the cell, the shield rolls around the top of the tray itself. 3D printing allows for a part design that includes features to hold stainless steel balls along with physical features to support the shield during operation (shaking & moving). (2) Polycarbonate print filament and stock 316 s/s parts are incorporated into the design to satisfy clean room specifications. (3) Given the weight of the load, stainless steel shims are inserted into the part during the print process. (4) A custom Delrin disc is attached at the bottom to aid sliding of the assembly within the desired space.
Extras: (1) This is an example of incorporating stock parts into a functional 3D printed part design (s/s shims & balls). (2) 3D printing this part’s complex geometries results in basically no scrap material and costs an estimated 90% less compared to CNC manufacturing of the same material.
